The announcement of Rupert Murdoch during a press conference that “The era for free-for-all in news content was over” has created lot of uproar in the news media. This was most shocking news to be coming from a media giant. Well, this seems a desperate act of trying to bring up the diminishing revenue up. But is this strategies ever going to work.
“Quality journalism is not cheap,” said Murdoch. “The digital revolution has opened many new and inexpensive distribution channels but it has not made content free. We intend to charge for all our news websites.” source: guardian.
The charging model will be extended to red-top tabloids such as the Sun and the News of the World. Murdoch said he was keen to capitalise on the popularity of celebrity stories: “When we have a celebrity scoop, the number of hits we get now are astronomical.” source: guardian.
. . .
He has even been heard of citing that if this turns out to be successful than ever other media is also going to follow same. But are you for the paid news. With the advent of free information sharing and the user generated content, how is this step towards the news going to affect the people’s attitude towards the main stream media.
There are already many anti-main-stream media group, won’t this be the high time for them to be putting their agenda which they have been fighting for so long. It must have been understood that in today’s world people are willingly to discusses the issue in open platform and be a part of news to change it, not the way around.
