“Panic Button” comes in facebook

by on December 7th, 2009

Facebook and other networking sites are to install panic buttons enabling children to alert admins if ‘inappropriate’ material is posted. The world’s largest social network is one of 140 organisations to sign up to the UK’s new voluntary internet standards to be launched on Tuesday. This move confirms Facebook’s commitment to security after it shut down a large number of sex offenders’ accounts in early 2008 and then signed a national agreement to help protect children online later that year.

The guidelines created by Clinical psychologist Tanya Byron, who advises the government on online safety, created the guidelines, which are expected to be officially launched tomorrow. The UK Council for Child Internet Safety (UKCCIS) will be responsible for fully detailing the internet safety standards, before publishing them next summer.

This is expected to encourage parents to take greater control over their children’s use of the internet. Parents are advised to keep the computer in common areas where they can closely monitor their children.
