Yahoo! Revamps Its Webmail and Search, Yahoo! Mail Beta Imminent

Microsoft and Google, as we have seen in the recent past have been upping the ante with new features and upgrades to their webmail service. Yahoo is hence in no mood to lag behind its business foes and has thus rolled out a slew of enhancements to its email service.

Yahoo! Mail Beta according to the company vows to offer users a cleaner, sleeker interface allowing seamless navigation through the inbox and use efficiently the other features built into the product. Yahoo claims its web service to be faster after “re-architecting many core features,” plus turning it into a real “ant-ispam warrior.”

Yahoo has also taken care of the social media needs of its users. Not only will the company integrate instant-messaging and SMS into the main Yahoo Mail in-box, it will also let Facebook and Twitter users see updates on the landing page for Yahoo Mail. The “What’s New” tab will allow users users to view their friends’ updates from Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr and also post updates to the same. Additional enhancements have been made to the video and photo sharing tools plus a new version of Yahoo! Messenger is on the catalog.

But that is not all. Yahoo has also revamped its search to give users rich search results for entertainment and news searches. For movies, music artists, or celebrities, results will combine  images, news articles, videos, tweets, events, and ratings. For news, they’ll include videos, images, articles, and tweets on a single page. Also coming this fall, the Trending Now lists on Yahoo.com and across the Yahoo! network will be accompanied by slideshows.

Given the competitive landscape, the new announcement does put Yahoo at much equal footing to its potential opponents. But with innovation still on wheels, it is yet to see who emerges out as a star.
