Android Smart Phones Lead as Second Top Seller in 2010

According to market analytic sources, Google’s Android sales have registered a tremendous record in 2010 & made it to reach Number 2 position. Even thou in the Smartphone segment Nokia Symbian is still at the top, but the race of Android is closing the gap as the Symbian sales figures declined. You may easily gauge out the galloping sales of Android by the fact that it’s sales adage a rise of 900% from 2009 figures, and clearly left Blackberry much behind in the race in third position. According to Gartner, Apple’s iOS was a close fourth position. Similar figures were quoted by IDC and Canalys reports.

Gartner puts to the phenomenal fourth quarter sales that boosted the overall sales figure for 2010 for Android. Note that Android is being used in more classy models of smartphones. Along with them the prominent are HTC Desire, Incredible and Evo, the Samsung Galaxy S line and Motorola Droid 2 and Droid X. In fact the Nokia OS had a ruled the market in 2009 with 47 % share, and around 80.8 million Symbian based phones were sold. But year to year growth for these smartphones amounted to just 31.5 million making it to reach 111.5 million sales. In contrast to the figures for Android, It had the market distribution of just 3.9% a year earlier at 6.7 million units sold. During the same period 47.4 million RIM Blackerry devices were sold making it to cover 16% of the market share. Apple iOS had 15.7 % market share with 46.7 million units sold. Microsoft Windows mobile and Windows Phone stood in the fifth place with market share of 4.2 % or a sale figure of 12.3 million units.

But in the larger mobile phone segment it is still Nokia that is placed in top position. It had sold 461 million units globally and held 28.9% of market share. It is well recognized fact that Nokia sales in North American market are poor. As pointed out by ComScore survey that Nokia which is doing very well in global market (33%) is selling to only 7% of total US sales in 2010.

The basis for this deficiency is that Nokia lacks high end devices and it also suffered dip in 2010 in smartphone and mobile market share in North American market. Market experts are watching the announcements from Nokia on Feb 11 about its future plans and also on how well these plans are executed. There are reports suggesting that Nokia could abandon Symbia altogether and adopt Windows Phone OS. Recently, media sources reported the news about Microsoft & Nokia both‘re planning to go together to beat the leading couple Apple & Google. Apple & Google both have thrashed out the market these two giants. It will mull the huge competitions in the future SmartPhone selling segment.
