Campaign to eradicate Internet Explorer 6!

by on March 5th, 2011 1

Internet Explorer 6 users across the world are being urged to stop using it as their web browser. A dedicated website, The Internet Explorer 6 Countdown (IE6Countdown.com), has also been launched to promote the campaign. However, It’s mind-boggling to know that this campaign has been launched by Microsoft itself!

The site displays a sentimental message, reading, “10 years ago, a browser was born. Its name was Internet Explorer 6. Now that we’re in 2011, in an era of modern web standards, it’s time to say goodbye.”

As explained on the website, it is aimed that ‘IE 6 usage should drop to less than 1% worldwide, so that more websites can choose to drop support for IE 6, saving hours of work for web developers.’ The site also displays statistics, sourced from Net Application, on the current usage of the browser in different parts of the world. The present global usage of IE 6 is just 12%. USA has just 2.9% IE 6 users. Most IE6 users are from East Asia, as indicated by the report. South Korea, India, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam have more than 10% IE 6 usage. About 34.5% IE 6 users are from China.

The website gives reasons to why users should upgrade, along with documentation for corporate networks and banners for webmasters to be embedded in their sites, urging users to upgrade to newer browsers. One such banner reads, “You are using an outdated browser. For a faster, safer browsing experience, upgrade free today”. Though strange, it is a responsible move from Microsoft.
