Google+ Traffic growing at a phenomenal pace

by on September 28th, 2011

Just 3 months back, on 28th June, Google launched its social networking site Google+. The site is already giving tough competition to the social networking giant Facebook, which has existed for so long. Google+ visits have still not surpassed that of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or even MySpace, but the site is growing at a phenomenal rate that that it would get there some time soon.

After Google+ opened its doors to the public on Sept 20th, the number of visits to the site have grown by huge numbers. Experian Hitwise, a market research company, reports that the site’s market share has increased by 1,269 percent from the week ending September 17th to the week of September 24th.

The site saw 15 million visits in the week of Sep. 24. One reason for this could be the  ongoing issues that Facebook users are having with the site. Though it would take a long time for Google+ to beat Facebook,  and establish its foothold in the world of social media, it’s in a position to overtake sites like MySpace and Linkedin very soon if it maintains its growth rate.

Google+ has been ranked 8th in Social Networking and Forums category by Experian Hitwise. However, other social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, MySpace etc. are still ahead of Google+ at this point.

The speed of Google+’s growth is also noteworthy, exceeding that of sites like Facebook and Twitter. It might be a bit early to tell whether this surge in traffic will be sustained, but Experian Hitwise spokesperson says that the popularity of Google’s other features — Gmail, YouTube and search should drive more people to use the site.
