Apple is building a Touchscreen Remote for controlling multiple devices
Apple is working on a new remote control that would automatically control a variety of devices.
According to the AppleInsider, the US Patent and Trademark Office has published a patent filed by Apple on Sep 30, that shows the company working on a universal touchscreen remote capable of controlling multiple devices.
According to the filing, Apple’s universal remote control will include a touchscreen which functions as the display screen and the user input mechanism and a discovery mechanism that would discover available appliances to control. The remote will control one or more of a television, video players, a stereo, and a “smart home” control system. It could also be used beyond electronic appliances, to control programs and functions on a computer, like allowing a user to play songs on iTunes on their Mac or PC.
“Manufacturers have created so-called universal remote controls, which can be trained to mimic several remote controls, and can then control each appliance for which they have been trained. While universal remote controls attempt to address the problem of multiple remote controls, these devices are more complex to operate, often confusing the user. And often times, these universal remotes cannot replicate some of the tasks found on the original remote, the filing points out.
Apple’s new touchscreen remote control, would not have the aforementioned limitations found in most of the other universal remote controls.
