Chinese microblog Sina Weibo sets a new traffic record over the Chinese New Year
The microblog craze is China has pushed the country’s popular microblogging platform Sina Weibo, beyond the traffic record set by the world’s popular microblogging site Twitter.
According to a recent report by the The Verge, Sina Weibo, saw record traffic of 32,312 messages a second, over the Chinese New Year last night.Overall, 481,207 messages were sent on Sina Weibo during the first minute of the New Year.
The traffic experienced by Weibo, breaks Twitter’s record of 25,088 tweets per second during a screening of Classic Anime series Laputa: Castle in the Sky on TV.
Microblog usage in China continues to grow. According to a recent report by China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), microblog usage has increased by 296 percent in 2011, and now nearly 48.7 percent of Chinese netizens are using microblogs.
The increasing popularity of microblog, has prompted Chinese authorities to tighten their control over microblogs, and enforce the real-name registration policy to spot fake profiles and prevent spreading of false rumors over microblogs.
