Google says ‘No’ to web censorship in India
Technology giant Google has stated that it’s not possible for the company to censor objectionable content on the web.
“I’m hoping there will be a balanced debate around it and eventually the right thing would happen. We cannot censor the Web. We cannot censor the ability of people to express themselves. You are asking not just censor the Web in India, you are asking to censor the entire world wide web. The Web has no borders,” Google’s chief business officer Nikesh Arora stated.
He further added that censoring everything and pre- clearing everything is going to taint the growth of the Indian economy.
Google is one among the 21 companies that have been asked to develop a mechanism to block objectionable material in India. Earlier this month, Facebook and Google told the Delhi High Court that they cannot block offensive content that appears on their services. The high court has now delayed the hearing till February 2. If their petitions fail, the companies will have to face trial in the lower court, which has its next hearing scheduled for March 13.
