Court hearing against Facebook, Google and other Internet companies today
A district court in Delhi will hear the civil petition filed against Facebook, Google and 20 other Internet companies, for posting objectionable content on their sites, today. The companies involved in the case are expected to present their compliance report before the judge today.
Last year, the Indian government had asked digital media companies and social networking sites such as Facebook, Yahoo and Google to screen online content on their websites and remove objectionable material before it goes live.
Justice Suresh Kait of the Delhi High court had issued summons to Facebook India, Google India and other Internet companies in India, asking them to remove all offensive content or risk facing criminal charges for hosting such content.
Google and Facebook argued that it is impossible for them to pre-screen content with billions of users accessing websites every day, and stated that they cannot develop a method to monitor defamatory material that’s been posted on their sites. They also added that blocking online content would curb the right of the users to freely express themselves on online platforms.
The Delhi High Court had announced on January 19 that it would hear the petition filed by Google, Facebook and other web companies on Feb 2.
