Cyber crime rate is growing in India : Chidambaram
The Union Home Ministry is planning to work with the National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) to reduce the rates of cyber crimes in India.
“In 2009, there were 2,866 reported incidents of cyber crime in India. The US-based Internet Crime Control Centre has said that India ranks fifth in number of cyber crimes. Every year cyber crime in India is going up at the rate of 50 per cent. Over the last five years, around 9,000 Indian websites were hacked,” said Home Minister P Chidambaram.
NASSCOM and Data Security Council of India (DSCI) are preparing a detailed project report to set up cyber crime police stations and cyber forensic labs across the country, according to the reports.
There are several other actions being taken to tackle cyber crimes in India. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) recently announced its plans of setting up Cyber Forensic Lab in Bangalore. The CBI has a Central Forensic Science Laboratory in Delhi and a state lab in Hyderabad for the investigation of cyber crimes, at present.
The new lab will be set up in the premises of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Palace Road in the city and would handle all cyber crime cases reported in the southern states.
“If the lab is established in the CID premises, then the sleuths of the cyber crime police station may also co-ordinate and interact with experts on a daily basis,” a senior police official stated.
A proposal has already been sent by the CBI to the state government, seeking their approval for the project. However, the government is yet to take a decision on the matter.
