Google may not be able to provide online mapping services in China
Google may not be able to provide Google maps services in China, as the company hasn’t received a license from China to conduct its business.
Feb 1 is the deadline for companies to send license requests to China’s State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping.
“From Feb 1, companies that haven’t applied for a license and those that have applied for a license but not received one would not be able to provide new online mapping services,” China’s State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping said in a statement on Jan 5.
According to China Daily, the Bureau had earlier stated that the Chinese division of Google has submitted its application. However, it didn’t say when the result of the company’s application would be announced.
To provide services in China, Google is required to hold a number of licenses. The company relocated its search engine business to Hong Kong in 2010 due to Chinese censorship laws, but it still continues to hold licenses to operate certain other web-based services in the country.
