Indian Railways authorize use of SMS as train tickets

Booking train tickets just got a lot easier now. Now, you can book train tickets using your cellphone and show the SMS to the ticket checker instead of a paper ticket.

In a move to make train reservation ticketing system more passenger friendly, the ministry of railways has agreed to permit Short Messaging Service (SMS) sent by Indian Railways Catering & Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) equivalent to Electronic Reservation Slip (ERS).

Passengers can book train tickets on their mobile by using the IRCTC mobile website: www.irctc.co.in/mobile. After booking, they will receive a reservation message with complete details of the ticket including PNR, Train No, date of journey, class, etc.

This SMS when displayed using laptops or mobile phones, and provided along with a photo-id in original, will be treated as a valid ticket. Passengers need to use this SMS ticket for all on-board and off-board checking. If a passenger fails to display this SMS( due to loss, discharged mobile/laptop etc.), but has the proof of identity, he/she has to pay a penalty of Rs 50 per ticket.
