Philadelphia Wings replace names on jerseys with Twitter handles

The team jerseys of the Philadelphia Wings of National Lacrosse League now flaunt the Twitter handles of the players instead of their names.

Being the first North American professional sports team to use Twitter handles on the back of the jerseys, The Wings are creating a huge buzz on traditional media and the social media platforms.

“In Philadelphia, the Wings are kind of the fifth or sixth fiddle with the Flyers, and the Sixers and the Eagles and the Phillies and everybody else in town. So, we were just looking for a way to gain more regional and national exposure,” stated the team spokesperson Zack Lloyd.

“This breaks down a barrier between fans and players. NLL players are known for their accessibility, and this is just another way we’re encouraging fan interaction,” added Wings player Max Seibald, who has more than 3,500 followers on Twitter.

Twitter has become quite popular in the sports circle with many players using the micro-blogging platform to connect with their fans, and share news on upcoming game events.

Lloyd explained that more than half of the Philadelphia players were already active on Twitter when team officials first told them about their plans. All the others signed up and have been using it to interact with fans, and generating publicity for the Wings and lacrosse.

“I don’t think it’ll ever be a case where we do it every game. But there’s the potential we might run it again next year,” he added.

The team plans to auction the jerseys after the game, with proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society.
