Rovio to sell Angry Birds merchandise on Chinese e-commerce site Tmall.com
Angry Birds are now flocking to the popular Chinese e-commerce site Tmall.com.
According to the China Daily, Rovio, the maker of the Angry Birds game is launching an online store on Tmall.com to sell Angry Birds merchandise. Rovio is apparently the first game developer on Tmall, where companies like Samsung Electronics Co and Nike Inc, sell their products.
With the launch of its online store, Rovio attempts to expand from a game developer to an entertainment company.
“We want more people to know that we are not only making games, but also a full suite of entertainment services including retail, animated short videos and comics,” said Rovio in an e-mail to the China Daily.
Rovio’s Chief Marketing Officer Peter Vesterbacka stated in September last year, that over 40 million people had downloaded Angry Birds in China, and that the company hopes the number to hit 100 million by December.
After from expanding to other countries, Rovio is also launching Angry Birds on different platforms. Last month, Rovio also announced that the company is bringing Angry Birds game to Facebook on Feb 14. The Facebook version of Angry Birds will provide users with a full-screen experience, and would be more interactive than the mobile version.
