A faster and improved version of Aakash tablet would be launched next month, Human Resources Development Minister Kapil Sibal stated.
Sibal said during Question Hour in Lok Sabha that Datawind will supply one lakh high speed tablets with a longer battery life and better screen.
Aakash-II will have higher specifications such as 700 MHz Cortex A8 processor, 3200mAH battery with three-hour usage time and a capacitative touchscreen, to overcome the limitations observed in the older version of the device.
Reports had earlier stated that improved specifications in the new version of Aakash would increase its price, but, the HRD Minister has now confirmed that Aakash-II will be available at the same price.
Sibal further added that once the tablet production capacities are built up, the govt will develop a plan for its distribution, with aim to prioritize empowerment of students, especially from disadvantaged and marginalized sections of society, by supplying this low cost computing device.
