To cater to the growing number of mobile web users, Facebook has just announced the launch of new apps for iPhone and iPad.
Facebook’s mobile users have complained about the speed of its iPhone and iPad apps. The new app, which the company launched at its Menlo Park, California headquarters, this Thursday, are claimed to be much faster than the older versions.
Mick Johnson, mobile product manager at Facebook, stated that programmers removed some lesser-used features, such as a way to view the app horizontally, to help speed up its performance.
Mobile has become Facebook’s top priority, since people have started using the social networking site using mobile apps more than desktops and laptops. The apps are part of what Facebook calls a transformation into a “mobile first” company.
“We have basically retooled and focused the company around mobile. It’s been a huge change,” said Mike Schroepfer, vice president for engineering of Facebook.
To boost its growth in the mobile space, Facebook has also re-arranged its product teams, to ensure that the company now makes mobile versions of new features at the same time that they are developed for the main website. Earlier, the company would make new features for the website first, and then the mobile team would follow up to update the site for mobile device.
