More and more people from the rural India are accessing the Internet.A recent report from Internet and mobile Association of India (IAMAI), says that the number of rural internet users has increased from 29 million as of December 2011 to 38 million at the end of June, and is expected to reach 45 million by the end of December this year.
The penetration of Internet in rural India has grown from 2.6% in 2010 to 4.6% in 2012, IAMAI further adds.
Smartphones are playing a major role in driving the popularity of Mobile Internet. As of June 2012, there were 3.6 Mn Mobile Internet users in India, a growth of 7.2 times from 0.5 million in 2010.
“This is just the tip of the iceberg, in the next two years, a combination of affordable smart phones, optic fibre backbone and local language content is likely to change the beat all projections of internet growth in rural areas,” said Subho Ray, president of IAMAI.
Surprisingly, the rural Internet users are going online mainly for entertainment and for gathering education-related information.
According to IAMAI, 75 percent of rural users use internet for entertainment like playing games, music, watching videos, and checking out photos, 56 percent use it for communication, 81 percent of Internet users use the web to seek information pertaining to school / university and exam centres.
