Study: Olympics 2012 generates more social media buzz than Cricket in India

Cricket is no doubt the most popular and the most-talked about sport in India. But, a recent study conducted by Simplify360, the leading Social Media Management application for Social Business Analytics and Multichannel Engagement, has found that the conversations about Olympics 2012 have surpassed that about cricket on social media channels in India.

According to Simplify360, Olympics generated more buzz in India than India Sri Lanka Series during the same time. Most of the conversations about London Olympics 2012 happened on social media sites Facebook and Twitter.

Talking about the study, Deep Sherchan, CMO, Simplify360 said, “Being a complete cricket driven country, it was a real surprise to see that other sports having such a huge buzz in India. Cricket might still have strong presence in the media and maintains leadership in the brand endorsement, Indians have moved on and they now have diversified their sports interest.This is going to have huge impact in celebrity and brand endorsements. Other sports will benefit with the move, and it is a good sign for the nation”.

Here are some of the other key findings of the study:

• Highest number of conversations happened on Twitter 17,614 Unique people
• MC Mary Kom event was on the peak of Olympic buzz
• Boxing reigns as the most talked sport followed by Badminton
• Saina Nehwal was the most popular Indian Sportsperson
• Most of the conversations came from Mumbai
